An insight into being an apprentice at Optimax

We asked our apprentice Logan to answer few questions about working at Optimax

What made you choose an Engineering apprenticeship with Optimax?

My family all work in engineering and so I had a good idea of what an apprenticeship in engineering would be like from them. I enjoy fixing problems and developing practical skills but I still wanted to ensure that I would get an education to back up the practical skills that I had and so an apprenticeship was the right route for me. I was specifically drawn to Optimax as I like the variety of companies that we deal with across a range of different industries.

What is a typical day like for you?

On a Monday I go to college to complete my Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. No two working days are the same – one day I might be in the office helping to diagnose and fix problems with machines, another day I would be doing a service and calibration of a profile projector or helping a colleague install new equipment.

What is your proudest achievement since joining?

In my second month at Optimax I became a UKAS qualified operator for the service & calibration of profile projectors. I was incredibly proud to have achieved this as UKAS service & calibration is an internationally recognised standard that ensures the highest possible quality and accuracy for our customers. I was also one of the youngest UKAS qualified operators.

What is the culture and work environment like?

In a word, variety – I enjoy being on the road and seeing new customers and environments and knowing that their machines will be working better once I have completed the service & calibration. There is a great team of engineers who are on hand to mentor me and continue my practical learning when I am based in the office.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I would like to have passed my Diploma and be mentoring an apprentice at Optimax, sharing my experiences and knowledge with them. I would also like to develop my UKAS qualified operator status so that I can work on all the equipment that we supply, service & calibrate.
